MINISTER HONORED FOR AID TO PRISONERS
LATVIA ACKNOWLEDGES MISSION WORK THERE

           Highland Heights - The Rev. Gregg W. Anderson is receiving international and regional praise for his ministry work with Latvian prisoners.

           The Rev. Mr. Anderson visited the Highland Heights post office about a week ago to discover that Vitolds Zahars, the top administrator of the Latvian prison system, had sent him a certificate and badge to honor his dedication.

           The Rev. Mr. Anderson has made six trips to the country since 1993.

           The most recent was about two months ago, when the Rev. Mr. Anderson, founder and director of the Highland Heights- based 70x7 Evangelistic Ministry, and a group of other missionaries spent two weeks at three maximum-security prisons.

           Their trip began in late September. It was the first time a Greater Cincinnati-led ministry visited Latvia to do missionary work.

           The certificate and badge "came as a surprise," the Rev, Mr. Anderson said. "I was speechless. It was an honor from God."

           The Princeton Pike Church of God in Hamilton helped pay for the September visit. During the Dec. 6 service, the congregation recognized the Rev. Mr. Anderson's international award.

           The Rev. Mr. Anderson served three years as chaplain of Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville, and he has spent five years training chaplains for 10 of Latvia's prisons.

           Before September's missionary effort, he had visited Latvia as a member of the Coalition of Prison Evangelists (COPE).

           When doing missionary work with prisoners, the Rev. Mr. Anderson focuses on the hope that religious faith offers.

           He would like to return to the Latvian prisons in the summer - preferably twice.

           He is planning early-and-late-summer visits. He would like to have other missionaries and a team of doctors and dentists accompany him.
